TL; DR

On February 27, 2026, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) notified the Green Ammonia Standard and Green Methanol Standard for India under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. For the first time, the standards set legally defined emissions thresholds for classifying ammonia and methanol as 'green'.

Key Provisions of the Standards

1. Green Ammonia Standard: Ammonia produced using Green Hydrogen. Non-biogenic GHG emissions must not exceed 0.38 kg CO2 equivalent per kg of ammonia. 2. Green Methanol Standard: Methanol produced using Green Hydrogen. Non-biogenic GHG emissions must not exceed 0.44 kg CO2 equivalent per kg of methanol. 3. CO2 Sourcing: CO2 for methanol synthesis can be sourced from biogenic sources, Direct Air Capture (DAC), or existing industrial sources.

Implications for Industry

The notification marks an important step in India's green hydrogen regulatory framework. For large industrial consumers, particularly in fertilisers and steel, the standards clarify green fuel specifications. For exporters, the standards help align India's green hydrogen derivatives with sustainability requirements in key markets like the EU.
